Tendrils 01 - Red Mountain Vineyard Tendrils

I do love to shoot these things! There is just something about the graceful curves that tendrils tend to create as they grow... Meanwhile, others grab onto something - other parts of the vine, nearby posts or wires - and try to strangle them! These are odd little things!

The New Ciel du' Cheval Facility...I think.

Ciel du' Cheval - Jim Holmes - are two of the most respected names on the mountain. Some of the oldest vines are the mountain are located here... I was told recently that they had a new facility and this fits the description quite nicely so I'll assume it is. :)

Any Idea How Much Water This Takes?

It will be interesting to watch the saga of Red Mountain's water. One of the least-liked institutions I've ever seen is the Kennewick Irrigation District - which is a long story for some other website, not this one - but it somehow has the authority to provide irrigation water to this area, a number of miles from Kennewick. Supposedly a new pumping plant and distribution system will go into this area, bringing water up from the Yakima River one of these days. Till then, most of the water here is from state (DNR) owned wells that must be providing about all they can by now. There can and will be hundreds if not a few thousand more acres planted in this premier AVA...but not till the water comes online from SOMEONE.

A Wall of Grapes in Behind the Leaves

Amazing how thickly these babies grow... A little while down the line these will be wine. And some of the best wine in a state that's quickly becoming known for its wines - particularly reds.

The view from this part of Red Mountain - roughly the center of the vineyards - is excellent. Might be my favorite view on the mountain.

I do like this place...and the people there. And from what I've seen, the best sunset shots I've taken from Red Mountain are from the patio here.

Col Solare Atop the Hill

Col Solare sits at what was the top of the hill, vineyard-wise. Now vineyards to the northwest have started to creep up the hill even further, though. It'll be interesting to see how this works out. I would have bet it was too vertical for any kind of farming, but that just shows what little I actually know... :)

This was my first chance to get out on the Mountain after the fruit began to grow this year. Wonder how late the harvest will be... 2011 has been a weird, weird weather year.

Green Grapes on Red Mountain

The grapes are a good bit behind this year. The cold and damp spring and early summer is taking a toll. There's a lot of foliage but not quite the amount of fruit one would expect. That said, I am no expert... I am quoting a couple of them though.
